Chapter Five
Lucas knew he was akin to a man driven. Driven by an inferno. It was the same fire that he had described to Dylan. Remembering the exact words, he played them over repeatedly again in his mind, but one soul burning with a constant inferno. They were one. The ransom note he found hours earlier, duct-taped to the pop machine, only fueled a rage he hadn’t known existed.
The arsenal of weapons neatly lined up on his bed, the same bed where he had consummated his commitment to Dylan, spoke not only to his rage but to a promise that he had made before to his husband. No one is going to ever hurt you again. Mark would soon find out the consequences of his warning, “If you ever try to lay a hand on him, I will kill you myself! Is that understood?”
Filling a duffel bag with an AK-47, SPAS-12 shotgun, and an AR-15, he also stuffed a Glock 9mm in the back of his pants. Lucas performed a meticulous and thorough cleaning on each firearm, as each weapon received ample ammunition. The duffel bag also contained extra rounds. Lucas’s firearm hobby had proven functional and well worth the hours spent at gun shows.
His private arsenal was no secret as it had begun almost ten years ago. It was just about the time that MeeMee had moved from the house she had shared with his grandfather into the assisted-living facility. She had discovered his grandfather’s Colt 45 hidden in a box under her bed. The weapon now rested in a velvet-lined steel box. Dylan had not ventured into the third bedroom, which was used as a collector’s showcase.
Lucas remembered growing impatient after getting out of the shower at the motel and went looking for Dylan. The scene he discovered had almost turned his stomach. A liter of ice and Coke cans seemed insignificant when his eyes first noticed the wrinkled piece of paper on the machine. It now sat on the dashboard of his Silverado. An icon of rage and a testament to the love he shared with Dylan.
As he backed his truck out the driveway, another bag sat on the seat filled with hundred dollar bills. One hundred crisp bills were neatly divided into ten one-thousand-dollar stacks. It was nearly his entire life savings. Mark’s note had asked for ten grand and no police involvement. He had made it clear that your faggot lover will die if law enforcement was anywhere around. Lucas had no intention of paying for Dylan’s return. It was a show. A decoy. A distraction for the well-executed escape that was forming in his mind.
Even though the note said that Mark would be in contact, Lucas knew immediately where he had taken Dylan. There was only one place that he could think of providing enough seclusion to hold another human being against their will, Granddad’s hunting cabin. Well, at least that was what his grandfather had called it. Actually, it was just a small two-bedroom frame house sitting atop a mountain at the end of an old logging trail.
